Peru's exports of organic bananas amounted to US$ 10.5 million in the first two months of 2011, a rise of more than 30 % compared with the same period in 2010, Andina reports. In terms of volume, exports of organic bananas increased by over 25 % to almost 17,000 tons. The Cavendish Valery banana, which totaled 9.1 million dollars in exports, experienced an increase of 45.5 %.
Increasing demand for those products came for the Netherlands (plus 44.4 %), Japan (plus 36.2 %) and Belgium (plus18.5 %). Bananas have been produced in the Chira Valley in Peru for a long time, and conversion to organic began in the late 1990s.
