Financial considerations still seem to be a barrier to choose the organic route. During the conversion-process period, farmers usually see lower yields and higher costs. According to a recent European study, developing an official label for organic conversion produce might be beneficial for farmers. The study published in the journal Food Policy examined organic farmers as well as those in the conversion process in the UK, Denmark, Italy, Portugal and Ireland and a total of 1,527 consumers across the five EU states, Greenplanet reports.

The study found out that consumers did not see the same value in conversion produce as in certified organic produce, but 50 % of the surveyed indicated they would be willing to pay a premium for conversion products to support farmers going through the process. Unwillingness to buy conversion produce was explained by lacking trust and unfamiliarity. The preference for certified organic produce was due to the fact that the surveyed did not consider the benefits of conversion produce to be equivalent.
