Scotland: Growing demand for organic milk

Source: Business Scotsman

According to Stuart Martin, marketing manager at the Scottish Organic Milk Producers' Association, organic produce is perceived by consumers to be an expensive premium brand. Therefore, in times of recession, sales may suffer. The price differential between conventional milk and organic milk, however, is the lowest it has been for a decade and consumers are taking advantage of that. While the price for conventional milk at retail level has risen by 14 % over the last year, organic milk has increased by 5 %.

The organic dairy sector claims to be one of the fastest growing, Business Scotsman reports. Sales of organic milk have increased  from a low level by 18 % in the past two years – and by 9 % in 2009. All major supermarkets are currently using their own brand labels. Organic milk contains beneficial nutrients and fewer additives, antibiotics, artificial hormones and chemical residues. Dutch scientists claim drinking organic milk resulted in 36 % fewer cases of eczema in young people.
