France: MON810 temporarily banned

Source: Farmers Weekly

The minister for agriculture in France, Mr. Le Maire, imposed a temporary ban on MON810 on 16 March 2012. Due to the proximity of the planting season, this precautionary measure was taken to protect the environment, according to the minister. The ordinance was published in the Official Journal and is available here (in French).

In February, France had asked the European Commission to suspend the authorization to sow the maize due to potential risks to the environment. The French agriculture ministry referred to an ESFA study, which said threats linked to BT11, another GM crop, could be associated with MON810. More information is available here.
