Balearic Islands: Organic land grew by 16%

Organic farming is gaining ground on the Balearics. According to a government official, the number of acres dedicated to organic production in the region has risen to 23,000, an increase of 16 % on the previous year. The number of producers has also increased, Ecoticias reports. Presently, 563 farmers are engaged in organic agriculture and livestock, ensuring quality and respect for the environment.
 
This data was revealed by the Councilor for Agriculture, Mercè Amer, who together with the Minister for Environment, Miquel Àngel Grimalt, the Councilor of Commerce and Industry, Xisco Vives, the president of the Apaema (Association of Ecological Agricultural Production of Mallorca) and other officials was present at  the third day of the event “Som el que sembram” in Monti-sion. More than thirty exhibitors displayed wine, vegetables, nuts, meat, oil, honey, jams, cakes, etc. Tastings, workshops, conferences, publications, a demonstration of sheep shearing and a cooking show were also part of the programme.
