On 22 December 2011, the UN General Assembly approved the declaration of the year 2014 as the International Year of the Family Farming (IYFF). This is the last stage of an intense national and international advocacy campaign through the general coordination (World Rural Forum, Spain), of which UNALM - Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, Peru, represented by IFOAM's Vice-President Roberto Ugas - has been a part through the Rector and the Vegetable Program. It is hoped that this declaration will multiply actions to highlight the importance of family farming in providing food, maintaining spaces and rural cultures, managing biodiversity and alleviating poverty. It is also anticipated that it will help promoting more and better policies and actions for governments at all levels to turn their attention to this vital sector of society and increasingly invest in it to allow a growing competitiveness of family farming and its attention to ecological and socioeconomic aspects. More information on the IYFF is available here.

During its last General Assembly in Korea, the IFOAM membership approved two motions about Family Farming and Agriculture. It was decided that IFOAM, as signatory organisation for the declaration of the International Year of Family Agriculture, shall lead the positioning of Family Agriculture - and its campaign - in the main networks, platforms and dialogue and cooperation spaces it participates, based on IFOAM's Smallholder Position Paper highlighting successful stories of family farmers members around the world. IFOAM should also encourage and participate in medium and long-term research in order to enable the integral assessment of organic systems of family farms, including monetary income and its impact on the quality of life of the families, especially for those who are internationally defined as living in 'poverty' conditions.
